AIS (Automatic Identification System) is a system fitted to ships which broadcasts to shore based receivers and (sometimes) satellite.  The system relays information such as position, speed, course, etc.  This makes it possible to see where a ship is often to within minutes of accuracy.  The service below is provided by marinetraffic.com and allows you to zoom in and out as well as change the type of map
